Expert Summary
Planning a Zanzibar itinerary? We spent 16 days on the island as a couple, splitting our time between Nungwi, Paje, and one night in Stone Town. The honest truth: 5 to 7 days is the sweet spot for most travelers, with enough time for Mnemba Island, Nakupenda sandbank, and at least one cultural day, without rushing.
If you only remember one thing from this guide, remember this: never skip Mnemba Island or Nakupenda sandbank. They were the two most unforgettable experiences of our entire trip.
Jump to a Section
When we first started planning this trip, we did what everyone does. We tried to squeeze every Pinterest-worthy spot into five rushed days. We ended up staying 16, splitting our time between Nungwi’s busy north coast, the slower pace of Paje, and one night in Stone Town we honestly should have made two. That’s really where this guide comes from.
This isn’t a generic “top things to do” list. This is the itinerary we wish someone had handed us before we left, built from real days, real mistakes, and the handful of moments that still come back to us months later: the turquoise water around Mnemba thick with color, a wooden boat grilling fresh fish just for us, and an afternoon spent in a local village that changed how we saw the whole island.
Below, you’ll find detailed day-by-day plans for 3, 5, 7, and 9 days in Zanzibar, plus a free interactive tool that builds a personalized version based on your travel style, your base location, and how many days you have.
How Many Days Do You Need in Zanzibar?
Q: What is the ideal number of days for a Zanzibar trip?
A: Most travelers should plan for 5 to 7 days in Zanzibar. Three days is enough only if you’re combining it with another destination (like a Tanzania safari or Kenya trip). Nine days or more lets you add a mainland safari day trip and fully slow down into island time, which is exactly what we did.

3-Day Zanzibar Itinerary
If we only had 3 days (which is exactly the question we asked ourselves before narrowing down our own 16-day trip), this is precisely what we’d do. No filler, no “maybe if there’s time.” Just the experiences that actually earned their place.
“If you asked us what to do with just 3 days, the answer is simple: Mnemba, Nakupenda, Kendwa, a Nungwi sunset cruise, and dinner at Mamma Mia. That’s the essence of Zanzibar in three days.”
Day 1: North Coast Arrival
Morning: Land, settle into Nungwi or Kendwa, and ease into island time on the beach.
Afternoon: Walk the coastline between Nungwi and Kendwa: calm lagoon water, powdery sand, your first real look at that impossible turquoise color.
Evening: Sunset dhow cruise out of Nungwi, followed by dinner at Mamma Mia. The pizza and the sunset view from there are exactly why this stayed our favorite restaurant of the whole trip.

Day 2: Mnemba Island (Full Day)
Build the whole day around this one. Mnemba isn’t something you can rush through between other plans, so give it the morning and the afternoon. The reef there beat everything else we snorkeled on the island, honestly: thick schools of fish, a couple of turtle sightings, water so clear it almost didn’t look real.

Day 3: Nakupenda Sandbank + Kendwa
Morning: Nakupenda sandbank: locals call it the “love sandbank,” and it only shows up at low tide. Someone cooks you a fresh seafood lunch right there on the sand. We’re not exaggerating when we say this was one of the best mornings of the whole trip.
Afternoon: Kendwa beach for a final swim, or try a clear kayak if you have the energy.
Evening: Farewell dinner back at Mamma Mia, or try the sister spot M&J Cafรฉ if you want something more low-key.

5-Day Zanzibar Itinerary
Five days is what we’d recommend to almost any first-time visitor. It’s enough time to add Stone Town and one slower cultural day, without feeling like you’re racing the clock.
Day 1: Arrival & North Coast
Settle into Nungwi or Kendwa. Beach time, first sunset, dinner at Mamma Mia.
Day 2: Mnemba Island (Full Day)
Same rule applies here as in the 3-day plan: Mnemba is a full-day experience. Don’t compromise on this one.

Day 3: Nakupenda Sandbank
Morning sandbank trip, afternoon free for the beach, evening at leisure. If you’re celebrating something (a honeymoon, an anniversary), this is the day to ask about a private add-on.

Day 4: Stone Town
A full day exploring the winding alleys, the old fort, and Forodhani Night Market in the evening. We only gave ourselves one night here on our trip and genuinely wished we’d stayed longer. There’s a different rhythm to the city that the beaches don’t have.

Day 5: Kilosa Animal Sanctuary + Farewell
A shorter, 1 to 2 hour visit to Kilosa Animal Sanctuary in the morning, then a relaxed final afternoon on the beach before departure.
7-Day Zanzibar Itinerary
Seven days is where Zanzibar really opens up, with enough time to add the east coast (Paje and Jambiani, where we ourselves spent several nights) and a proper visit to Jozani Forest, which we missed on our own trip and regretted.
Day 1: Arrival, North Coast
Nungwi or Kendwa, beach time, sunset.
Day 2: Mnemba Island (Full Day)

Day 3: Nakupenda Sandbank

Day 4: Stone Town + Spice Farm
Combine the city with a Spice Farm tour in the morning or afternoon. It’s a shorter add-on that fits naturally alongside Stone Town.

Day 5: East Coast (Paje & Jambiani)
Move to the east coast for the day: wide beaches, kitesurfing if you’re interested, and a completely different pace from the north. This is where we ended up staying longer than planned during our own trip.
Day 6: Jozani Forest (Full Experience)
This is the one we’d do differently. Skip the shorter Kilosa visit and commit to the full 4 to 5 hour Jozani Forest experience, home to the red colobus monkeys found almost nowhere else on Earth.
Day 7: Local Village Visit + Farewell
If you can arrange it through a local guide, a village visit is something we’d put at the very top of any honest Zanzibar itinerary. Ours included bringing supplies to children in the community, and it remains the single most emotional day of our entire trip, more than any beach, more than any sunset.
9-Day Zanzibar Itinerary
Nine days is full immersion, close to the rhythm of our own 16-day trip, just compressed. This is also the only itinerary length where we’d recommend adding a mainland safari day trip, since you have the buffer to enjoy it without feeling rushed back to the coast.
Day 1: Arrival, North Coast
Nungwi or Kendwa, beach time, sunset dhow cruise.

Day 6: East Coast (Paje & Jambiani)
A full day exploring the east coast: different scenery, different pace, well worth the detour from the north.
Day 7: Jozani Forest (Full Experience)
The complete 4 to 5 hour forest experience, including the red colobus monkeys.
Day 8: Mainland Tanzania Safari Day Trip
This is what makes 9 days worth it: a day trip across to the Tanzanian mainland, to Mikumi or Selous, for a real Big Five safari. Depending on your operator you’ll either fly back to the island that same evening or the next morning.
Day 9: Local Village Visit + Ocean Swimming + Farewell
Save your last full day for a local village visit and simply swimming in the ocean at a few different spots, something we wish we’d done more of throughout our own trip rather than sticking to just one or two beaches.
For Couples & Honeymooners
Not Your Average Trip: Made for Two
If you’re traveling as a couple or celebrating a honeymoon, these are the experiences worth building your itinerary around:
- ๐ Nakupenda Sandbank: locally known as the “love sandbank,” and the most romantic morning of our entire trip
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Private Sunset Cruise: a quieter alternative to the group dhow cruise (price on request)
- ๐ฝ๏ธ Private Beachfront Dinner: lantern-lit, just the two of you (price on request)
- ๐ Couples Massage: most north coast resorts offer this as a spa add-on (price on request)
- ๐คฟ Private Mnemba Island Tour: the same incredible snorkeling, without a group
Top Experiences You Cannot Miss in Zanzibar
Across every itinerary length above, these five experiences appear again and again, and for good reason. Based on our own 16 days on the island, this is the list we’d hand to anyone before they go.
- Mnemba Island Snorkeling: the best reef we found anywhere on the island, full of color and sea turtles
- Nakupenda Sandbank: the sandbank that disappears with the tide, with fresh seafood cooked right there
- Sunset Dhow Cruise: the classic Nungwi evening, best paired with dinner at Mamma Mia
- Forodhani Night Market: Stone Town’s nightly food market, loud, fragrant, and completely worth it
- A Local Village Visit: not on most lists, but it was the most moving day of our entire trip
Mistakes We Made in Zanzibar
No itinerary feels honest without admitting what we’d do differently:
We didn’t rent a car, and that turned out to be the right call. Road conditions and transport quality across the island were genuinely poor in places. We’d actively recommend against renting a car yourself; arrange transfers through your accommodation or a local driver instead.
We only visited Kilosa Animal Sanctuary, not Jozani Forest. Kilosa is a fine 1 to 2 hour stop, but Jozani is the full 4 to 5 hour experience with the red colobus monkeys, and we genuinely regret skipping it.
We stuck to too few swimming spots. Looking back, we wish we’d gotten in the ocean at more beaches along the way instead of returning to the same one or two each time.
How Much Money We Actually Spent
Here’s an honest breakdown of approximate per-person activity costs from our own trip and current pricing, so you can budget realistically:
| Nakupenda Sandbank | from $55/person |
| Mnemba Island Snorkeling | from $70/person |
| Jozani Forest | from $50/person |
| Kilosa Animal Sanctuary | from $12/person |
| Stone Town Walking Tour | from $20/person |
| Spice Farm Tour | from $15/person |
| Sunset Dhow Cruise | from $25/person |
| Mainland Safari Day Trip | from $250/person |
Luxury add-ons like private dinners, private cruises, and couples massages are typically priced on request depending on your resort.
Is Zanzibar Safe for Women?
This comes up often enough that it deserves a direct answer. Generally, yes: Zanzibar is considered safe for female travelers and solo women, including on the main tourist areas of Nungwi, Kendwa, and Stone Town. The most common-sense precautions apply: dress modestly away from resort beaches (Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island), avoid walking alone late at night in Stone Town’s quieter alleys, and arrange transport through your accommodation rather than hailing transport informally.
One thing that surprised us positively throughout our trip was how kind and direct the local Maasai community members we met were, a welcoming presence rather than anything to be wary of, contrary to what a few overly cautious blog posts suggest.
Best Activities by Travel Style
For Couples
Nakupenda Sandbank, Mnemba Island, a sunset dhow cruise, and dinner at Mamma Mia in Nungwi.
For Solo Women
Stone Town walking tour, Spice Farm, Jozani Forest: all easily joined as small group tours, with built-in social opportunities.
For Luxury Travelers
A private Mnemba Island tour, private beachfront dinners, couples spa treatments, and a private guide for Stone Town.
For Families
Kilosa Animal Sanctuary (shorter and easier with kids), calm swimming at Kendwa, and the Spice Farm tour, which tends to be more interactive and kid-friendly than a full Jozani Forest visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need in Zanzibar?
Most travelers should plan for 5 to 7 days. This is enough time for Mnemba Island, Nakupenda sandbank, Stone Town, and at least one full rest day, without feeling rushed.
Is 3 days enough for Zanzibar?
Three days works if you’re combining Zanzibar with a mainland safari or another destination. It’s tight, but enough for Mnemba, Nakupenda, Kendwa, and a sunset cruise.
What is the best month to visit Zanzibar?
June through October offers the driest weather and most reliable conditions for snorkeling trips like Mnemba and Nakupenda. December to February is also popular but warmer and more humid.
Should I rent a car in Zanzibar?
We would not recommend it. Road conditions and traffic patterns across the island are inconsistent, and arranging transfers through your accommodation or a local driver is both safer and less stressful.
Is Mnemba Island worth it?
Yes, it was the single best snorkeling experience of our entire trip, with consistently clear water, abundant fish, and regular sea turtle sightings. Because of boat timing and tides, it works best as a full-day excursion rather than a half-day add-on.
What is Nakupenda sandbank?
Nakupenda is a sandbank off Zanzibar’s west coast that only appears at low tide, often called the “love sandbank.” Day trips typically include a boat ride, beach time, and a fresh seafood lunch cooked on the sand.
Is Zanzibar good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Nakupenda sandbank, private sunset cruises, and beachfront dinners make it one of the more romantic islands in East Africa, particularly across a 5 to 7 day itinerary.
How much does a week in Zanzibar cost?
Activity costs alone for a 7-day trip (excluding flights and accommodation) typically range from $250 to $400 per person, depending on how many tours like Mnemba, Nakupenda, and Stone Town you include.
Can I see a sea turtle in Zanzibar?
Yes, wild sea turtle sightings are common around Mnemba Island, and we encountered one ourselves during a snorkeling trip there.
